On May 17, 2016, the Women and Lung Cancer Research and Preventive Services Act of 2016 was introduced in both the Senate and the House of Representatives. S. 2941 (.pdf) and H.R. 5263(.pdf) is authorizing legislation that will do the following:

  • Call on HHS, DOD and VA to put together a report that: discusses existing research activities and knowledge gaps related to women and lung cancer offers recommendations for a collaborative, innovative research program
  • Call on HHS, DOD and VA to develop a national screening strategy to expand access, especially to underserved populations
  • Call on HHS, DOD and VA to develop a national public awareness campaign on women and lung cancer and early detection

S. 2941 was introduced by Senators Kelly Ayotte (R-NH), Dianne Feinstein (D-CA), Marco Rubio (R-FL) and Maria Cantwell (D-WA). Co-sponsors now include (in order of their sign on) Michael Bennet (D-CO), Barbara Boxer (D-CA), Chuck Grassley (R-IA) and Kristen Gillibrand (D-NY).

H.R. 5263 was introduced by Representatives Rick Nolan (D-MN), Frank LoBiondo (R-NJ), Lois Capps (D-CA) and Peter DeFazio (D-OR).
