Throat soreness (esophagitis) is when the throat becomes inflamed and swollen. In people being treated for lung cancer, this may be an unfortunate side effect from radiation to the chest. It is particularly common in people who receive chemotherapy and radiation at the same time but can also happen when just radiation is being used.

Practical tips to prevent and manage throat soreness

  • Eat soft foods. Avoid foods that may be sharp, like chips
  • Avoid spicy, citrus, or acidic foods
  • Avoid drinking alcohol or using tobacco products
  • Eat small meals throughout the day instead of three big meals.

Ask your doctor about pain relievers such as anesthetic lozenges or mouthwash. Try using them before you eat to numb your throat and reduce discomfort.
