Through our community fundraising program, dedicated and caring people can turn their personal passion into a fundraiser. For the past six years, San Francisco area resident Glenda Carroll has been event director for Tamalpais Aquatic Masters (TAM) for an annual elite swimming fundraiser to honor fellow swimmer Jon Steiner.

Jon Steiner was a long-time member of TAM and active with local and national Masters Swimming committees. Jon lost his battle with lung cancer in 2006. He originated the TAM 1650 “Don’t Waste Your Base” swim in 1996 with just a few participants.

Jon lost his battle with lung cancer in 2006. Glenda and the planning committee wanted to do something to celebrate his love of swimming and his event. That continues to inspire the team.

Today the event, renamed the Miracle Mile, attracts close to 200 swimmers from across the country. The event takes place yearly during the month of January. Many dedicate their swim to a loved one. TAM has donated more than $15,500 in Jon Steiner’s memory over the past eight years.

When asked if she has any advice for others interested in starting a fundraiser, Glenda shares, “We figured it out as we went along. If you are thinking about starting a fundraiser, just take the first step and do it. Over the past six years, I have seen swimmers from across the country swim this event in honor of Jon. I feel a sense of pride when that happens. “
